Construction on Centrumeiland Amsterdam

We will be developing Centrumeiland on IJburg to make it resistant to heavy rain and drought. This is how we are preparing Amsterdam for the consequences of climate change. What does this mean for you?

Centrumeiland Amsterdam

The Centrumeiland on IJburg is located higher up. If it is dry for a long time, the soil can dry out considerably. This causes trees and plants, among other things, to dry out. That is why we will be bringing rainwater into the soil. We will ensure that streets, squares and green spaces collect water. The water will remain here temporarily. It will then sink into the soil. We will therefore not be installing a rainwater public sewer system on Centrumeiland.

Extreme storms

Is there a lot of rain? And are we unable to store the water or let it sink into the soil? Then we will transport a small portion to the IJmeer. This will prevent flooding. It will also prevent damage and dangerous situations. Not to mention, it will benefit the water system.

Water and your soil

Are you building on Centrumeiland? Handle rainwater in accordance with the requirements of the building envelope. You will receive this from the municipality. Allow rain that falls in your garden to sink into the soil. Temporarily store rainwater on your roof.

After the rain, we will drain the water to the soil in a controlled manner. Please note that there is no rainwater public sewer system on Centrumeiland.
