Rainwater
Summers in the Netherlands are becoming wetter and wetter. It is raining more often and harder. What happens to all that rainwater?
More flooding
Some of the rainwater ends up in the groundwater. This groundwater will rise. Rainwater that falls on your roof flows into the public sewer system via the downpipe. Rain that falls on the street also ends up there. This means that the public sewer system is being used more often and is under greater strain. Water will remain on the streets more often and for longer periods of time.
How will the municipality of Amsterdam deal with rainwater in the future? This is specified in the Environmental Programme for Sewage 2022-2027 (pdf, 24.9 MB) (in Dutch)
What can you do?
Waternet must ensure that the public sewer system and groundwater are in good condition to prevent flooding. But you can also take action yourself. Check out our tips to prevent flooding. On the Amsterdam Weerproof website (You are leaving this website) (in Dutch), you can find more information about how to prevent flooding.

Centrumeiland Amsterdam
We will not be installing a rainwater drainage system on the new Centrumeiland on IJburg in Amsterdam. We collect water via streets, squares and green spaces. This is how we prevent flooding.
