Understanding your final tap water bill

If you are moving home you will receive a final tap water bill for your home. This shows the amount you have paid for your tap water up to your moving date and compares it to your actual water consumption.

You will receive a final tap water bill within 2 weeks after you have moved (the date you have handed in your keys). You will receive a final bill after you have submitted the last meter reading of your former address. This way we will know exactly how much water you have consumed prior to your move. And you will always pay the correct amount.

If your home does not have a water meter

You will not receive a final bill if your home does not have a water meter. Then, you will only receive your quarterly or monthly bills.

Understanding your final tap water bill

How is my final bill determined?

Your final bill is based on:

  • Your bills: have you paid all your bills (such as advance payments) or do you still have outstanding payments? Tip: view your bills via My Waternet.
  • Your water consumption: how much water have you consumed prior to your move?

Why is an additional payment required? Or why am I being refunded?

Your water bill is an advance payment. Your advance payment is estimated and based on your previous water consumption. Therefore, your advance payment may be higher or lower than your actual water consumption.

  • Have you paid for more water than you have consumed? Then the difference will be refunded.
  • Have you paid for less water than you have consumed? Then you should pay the difference to Waternet.

Understanding your annual statement

Multiple amounts are listed on your annual statement under the heading ‘Eindafrekening’ (Final settlement):

  1. Waterverbruik (Water consumption): You can view your water consumption in cubic metres (m³) here. 1 cubic metre is 1000 liters.  Two water consumption rates are listed: the rates through 2017 and the rates from 2018 onwards.
  2. Vastrecht (Standing charge): You pay a fixed amount annually to help maintain the water pipes. Two standing charge rates are listed: the rates through 2017 and the rates from 2018 onwards.
  3. Belasting op leidingwater (Tap water tax): This tax is charged per m³ of your water consumption.
  4. Btw (VAT): 6 % tax is levied over the standing charge, your water consumption and the taxes on tap water.
  5. Totaal verschuldigd (Total payment due): This shows the water rates for your total water consumption over the past year.
  6. Reeds in rekening gebracht (Already charged): This amount is the total amount of all of your installment payments.
  7. Saldo (Balance): This is the difference between 5 and 6. Please note: the balance stated on the annual statement is only correct if you have paid all of your bills. If this is not the case we will subtract the outstanding balance from this amount.
    • Is your Balance positive, for example € 10.00? And have you have paid all of your bills? Then this amount will be refunded.
    • Is your Balance negative, for example € - 20,00? Then you must pay the outstanding balance.
