Is your home prepared for the winter?
In winter, the water in your pipes may freeze. This will prevent water from coming out of the tap, and pipes may break. These tips will help you prevent problems.
Tip 1: insulate pipes
Insulate your main water shut off valve, water meter and pipes with insulation material. Ensure that the space remains well ventilated.
Do you live on a houseboat? Then the water pipe runs from the shoreline to your houseboat. Insulate this pipe extra well. In case of severe frost, the pipe may still freeze, even with insulation.
Tip 2: Turn off outdoor taps
Do you have outdoor taps? Turn them off during winter:
- Close the shut-off valve on the external pipe.
- Open the drain valve. This will allow the water to drain out.
- Open other taps in cold spaces.
- Allow everything to drain out.
- Then close all the taps again.
Your pipes are now ready for winter!
Tip 3: Maintain the temperature in your home
Set your thermostat to at least 15 degrees, even when you are not at home. Always turn the heating up a little in cold spaces.
