Who we are
For more than 170 years, Waternet and its predecessors has been providing clean drinking water in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. This is important for everyone. We do this with the help of nature and modern technology. We also treat sewage water, maintain the sewer system, measure groundwater levels, keep the canals clean and maintain and operate many bridges and locks in Amsterdam on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam. We work as sustainably as possible.
The water cycle
There is no life without water. Clean water is important for our health and our future. That is why Waternet produces the best tap water. We ensure that wastewater and rainwater flow into the sewer system. Then we treat the wastewater, reclaim usable materials and release the treated water back into nature.
We ensure that the surface water is kept at the right levels. We also ensure that our dykes are up to standard. And we keep the canals clean. We are a unique company: we are the only water company in The Netherlands that manages the whole water cycle.

We can be easily reached, anticipate our customer’s needs and offer solutions. We want to offer you as much support as possible with your payments, questions or complaints. You can quickly and easily manage most of your account details online.

Effective
We work efficiently and make the best possible use of our time, money and energy. We focus on the results. By combining a wide range of tasks related to water in one organisation, we can save costs. We are also able to tackle issues such as climate change more effectively.
Sustainable
We have a responsibility towards people, the environment and society. We are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We want to be as climate neutral as possible. This means that we want to reduce and/or avoid carbon emissions.
Our board
Waternet is part of Stichting Watermaatschappij Amsterdam (Amsterdam Water Company Foundation).
This foundation has three statutory directors:
- Yvonne Jakobs for Tap Water
- Bennie Rusken for Amsterdamse Riool- en Watertaken (Amsterdam Sewage and Water Tasks)
- Eric van den Bos for Shared Services
Our innovations
The world is changing and we are changing with it. Climate change is a fact. It has a major impact on our work with water. Therefore, we are continuously working on new solutions for this problem. We are also working hard to save energy. And to use more sustainable energy. We cooperate with other water organisations to realise this.
We continue to look for new ways to build a greener future. For example, the recovery of hot water from your shower. Or installing solar panels and water purification systems on our buildings. We are also excited about green roofs. These roofs collect rainwater and make the city more attractive.
